Quitting Kratom Extracts: How to Step Down to Powder
Extract users face a unique challenge: a single MIT45 Black Label capsule contains 9x the mitragynine of standard raw leaf. This guide provides exact conversion tables.
The Extract Problem
Kratom extracts concentrate the active alkaloids to levels far beyond what plain leaf provides. While a gram of standard kratom powder contains approximately 10-20mg of mitragynine, extract products can contain 100-500mg+ per serving.
This concentration creates two problems for cessation:
- Deeper dependence — higher receptor occupancy means more extensive downregulation
- No direct taper path — you cannot meaningfully taper extract products in small increments because the doses are already small and concentrated
The solution is to first transition to plain leaf powder, then taper the powder dose.
Product Potency Reference
| Product | Mitragynine per Serving | Approximate Powder Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Standard powder (1g) | 10-20mg | 1g (baseline) |
| Enhanced powder (1g) | 30-50mg | 2-4g |
| MIT45 Gold Capsule | ~35mg | 3-4g |
| MIT45 Black Label | ~90mg | 7-9g |
| OPMS Gold Capsule | ~40mg | 3-5g |
| OPMS Black Capsule | ~55mg | 4-6g |
| Liquid extract shot | 50-150mg | 5-12g |
These are approximate conversions. Individual products vary. Always start with a conservative (higher) powder estimate and adjust down.
The Step-Down Protocol
Week 1: Establish Baseline
Continue your current extract routine but document every dose: product name, amount, and time. Calculate your total daily mitragynine intake using the table above.
Week 2: First Substitution
Replace your least important daily extract dose with the equivalent amount of plain leaf powder. Most users find that a mid-day or afternoon dose is easiest to substitute first.
Week 3: Second Substitution
Replace a second extract dose with powder. You may need to slightly increase the powder amount if you notice increased discomfort — this is normal during the transition.
Week 4: Third Substitution
Continue replacing extract doses with powder equivalents. By the end of week 4, you should be taking no more than one extract dose per day.
Week 5: Final Transition
Replace your last extract dose with powder. You are now entirely on plain leaf powder and ready to begin a standard taper.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
- Use a digital scale — powder doses must be measured accurately
- Choose a consistent powder strain — switching strains introduces variability
- Expect some discomfort — the transition is not perfectly smooth because extract and powder alkaloid profiles differ
- Do not rush — if a substitution causes significant discomfort, hold at that level for an extra week
- Begin agmatine — 500mg-1g daily during the transition helps bridge the potency gap
