Our Methodology

How the Taper Calculator Works

Three simple steps. One evidence-based algorithm. A personalized day-by-day schedule built on pharmacological science — not guesswork.

Step 01

Tell Us About Your Usage

Enter your current kratom product, daily dose, dosing frequency, and how long you have been using. If you use extracts or enhanced products, our potency conversion engine normalizes everything to a standard mitragynine-equivalent dose.

Step 02

Choose Your Taper Speed

Select from three evidence-based taper profiles — Aggressive (4-6 weeks), Standard (8-12 weeks), or Ultra-Slow (16-24 weeks). Each uses a different reduction percentage calibrated to balance comfort against duration.

Step 03

Get Your Personalized Schedule

Our algorithm generates a day-by-day taper schedule using exponential decay math adapted from CDC opioid tapering guidelines. Each step reduces your dose by a fixed percentage, so reductions are proportionally equal at every stage.

The Science Behind the Algorithm

Our calculator is not a random dose-reduction tool. It is built on published pharmacological research and validated against real-world outcomes.

Exponential Decay Algorithm

Unlike linear reduction (dropping the same number of grams each time), our exponential model reduces by a fixed percentage. This prevents the disproportionate drops at lower doses that cause most tapers to fail.

Adapted from CDC Guidelines

Our taper curves are modeled on the CDC's 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids, adapted for kratom's unique pharmacokinetic profile (mitragynine half-life: 23 hours).

Community-Validated

Our reduction percentages and stabilization periods are informed by 16,000+ recovery experiences shared on r/quittingkratom, cross-referenced with published pharmacological data.

Important Limitations

This calculator generates a mathematical model, not medical advice. It cannot account for individual health factors, co-occurring conditions, or medication interactions. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before changing substance use patterns. If you experience severe symptoms, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
